SCALARWORKS LEAP/01: THE $159 CHUNK OF ALUMINUM I KEEP BUYING

There are certain things in the gun world that are objectively stupid.
Paying $2,000 for an AR and putting a $79 Amazon optic on it is stupid.
Paying $400-$900 for an optic then using a $39.00 mount sounds pretty stupid too.

Yet here we are.

Meet the Scalarworks LEAP/01.

WHAT DOES IT ACTUALLY DO?

The LEAP/01 mounts Aimpoint Micro-footprint optics to your rifle. That includes the Aimpoint T-1, T-2, H-1, H-2 and CompM5, along with a bunch of Holosun, SIG, Primary Arms and Vortex optics using the same footprint.
Scalarworks currently offers it in three heights:
1.42” — Absolute co-witness
1.57” — Lower 1/3
1.93” — Tall-guy tactical

The weights are 1.52, 1.58 and 1.80 ounces respectively. It’s machined from 7075-T6 aluminum, uses steel hardware, and is made in the USA. Current MSRP is $159. (SCALARWORKS)

None of that sounds particularly exciting.

Then you actually put one on a rifle.

THE FIRST THING YOU NOTICE: THERE’S BASICALLY NOTHING THERE

The LEAP looks like Scalarworks handed an optic mount to an engineer and said:
“Delete everything that isn’t absolutely necessary.”
Funny enough, the founder is an actual engineer. 
It’s skeletonized without looking like somebody attacked it with a drill press in their garage but more importantly its extremely light. 

The 1.93-inch version weighs just 51 grams—1.80 ounces. 
That might sound like obsessive gun-nerd nonsense. Because it is. But ounces become pounds pretty quickly once your formerly “lightweight carbine” has a T-2, magnifier, laser, white light, suppressor, sling, pressure switches and enough cable management to qualify as residential electrical work.

Saving an ounce here actually isn’t stupid.

Especially when you’re not giving anything useful up.

OH! And when you open up the box you’ll see quality packaging and my favorite part, the proper Torx bit and screws with thread locker applied. This is detail that cannot be overlooked.
 
CLICKDRIVE: QD WITHOUT THE GIANT LEVER

This is probably my favorite part of the LEAP.
Instead of hanging a big QD lever off the side, Scalarworks uses its ClickDrive thumbscrew system.
You turn the little wheel by hand until it’s tight.
Click. Click. Click.
Done.

Scalarworks uses a spring-loaded ball detent against the adjustment crown to prevent it from backing off under recoil. The company also guarantees the LEAP to hold and return to zero. (SCALARWORKS)
It’s simple. 
No wrench.
No giant ADM-style lever sticking off the rifle.
No digging through your range bag looking for the Torx wrench that you definitely put in there six months ago.
It’s simple.
And simple is underrated.

If I have to read a six-page installation PDF and break out a torque wrench to attach a red-dot mount, we’ve officially lost the plot.

BUT IS IT ACTUALLY TOUGH?

This is where lightweight gun parts sometimes worry me.
There is lightweight because somebody intelligently removed unnecessary material.

Then there’s lightweight because somebody removed necessary material and we’re all about to discover exactly which material that was.

The LEAP falls into the first category.

The combination of 7075-T6 aluminum, steel hardware and the triangulated structure gives you something that feels significantly more substantial than the scale suggests.
I care whether it survives training, getting knocked into barricades, riding around in vehicles, getting tossed into cases and generally being treated like a tool designed for hard work.

That’s the standard most of us actually need.

WHAT HEIGHT SHOULD YOU BUY?

1.57 or 1.93?
This argument has probably destroyed more friendships than politics.

The LEAP/01 comes in three heights:
1.42” — absolute co-witness
1.57” — lower 1/3
1.93” —internet operator configuration
For me, 1.57 is the sweet spot. Period.
I’ve tried the taller-mount thing. I understand why people like it, especially with night vision, gas masks, lasers, or other equipment stacked on the top rail. There’s absolutely a place for it.
But for a general-purpose rifle that I’m actually going to shoot in a bunch of different positions, 1.57 is my favorite optic height. ((Yes I know the 1.93” is pictured, this used to be my NVG setup))
It gives me a natural cheek weld without feeling like I’m trying to bury my face into the stock. It’s still quick coming up from low ready, works well standing, kneeling, around barricades, and doesn’t start getting weird when I go prone.
Most importantly, I don’t have to relearn something I’ve been doing naturally for years just because the internet decided optics need to be mounted somewhere around forehead level.

The 1.93 isn’t bad.
The 2.26 crowd isn’t wrong either.
Different equipment and different jobs create different requirements.
But I don’t run a rifle based on what currently looks cool in somebody else’s Instagram reel.
For the way I shoot, 1.57 just works.
It’s boring.
It’s proven.
And after experimenting with taller mounts, I keep coming back to it.
Sometimes the Goldilocks option really is the right answer.

This is where gun people will argue on the internet.
 
I grew up in the era where absolute co-witness was normal.

Then lower-third became normal.

Then 1.93 became normal.

Then Unity showed up at 2.26 and suddenly everybody developed giraffe necks without understanding who that height was designed for. 

For a general-purpose rifle, 1.57” is probably my favorite LEAP height.

LEAP VS. UNITY FAST

This is probably the comparison everyone wants.
The Unity Tactical FAST Micro puts the T-2 at 2.26 inches and currently costs $205. It also incorporates adjustable front and rear backup sights and weighs under 3.5 ounces. (UNITY Tactical)
The Unity is excellent.
But it’s solving a slightly different problem.
If you’re heavily invested in night vision, masks, lasers and Unity’s FTC magnifier ecosystem, the FAST system makes a ton of sense.
It’s basically an ecosystem.

The Scalarworks is more like:
“Here’s your red dot. It’s taller now. Go shoot.”
And personally, for a simple general-purpose rifle, I prefer the less complicated approach.
Unity wins if you want the whole 2.26 ecosystem.

Scalarworks wins if you want minimal weight and minimal crap attached to the gun.

LEAP VS. REPTILIA DOT MOUNT

The Reptilia DOT Mount is probably the strongest value argument against the Scalarworks.
The 1.93 Reptilia currently costs $124.95 and is also machined from 7075-T6 aluminum with a Type III hardcoat anodized finish. (Reptilia)
Reptilia makes fantastic stuff.
It’s simple.
It’s strong.
It’s low profile.
And it costs about $34 less.
Here’s the catch:
The Reptilia isn’t QD.
If you’re the guy who mounts an optic and doesn’t remove it until you sell the rifle three years later to fund another rifle that does basically the exact same thing, you may not care.
Actually, you probably shouldn’t care.
Buy the Reptilia.
But the ClickDrive is a legitimate advantage for the Scalarworks if you remove optics, move equipment between guns or simply like having tool-less removal available.

Whether that feature is worth another $34 is up to you.

LEAP VS. LARUE

We also have to mention the OG.
The LaRue LT660 has been around forever because it works.
The LT660 currently runs $149.99, uses LaRue’s locking Speed Lever QD system and places the optic around 1.64 inches over the rail in its standard 1/3 co-witness configuration. LaRue guarantees return to zero. (LaRue)
The LaRue is the old Ford F-250 of red-dot mounts.
It’s not trying to win a beauty contest.
It doesn’t care about your Instagram build.
It just shows up for work.
Scalarworks feels like the modern evolution of the same idea.
Cleaner.
Lighter.
Less stuff hanging off the side.
If I already owned an LT660, would I throw it in the trash and immediately buy a LEAP?
Absolutely not.
That’s how you end up explaining credit-card charges to your wife.

If I were buying from scratch today?

I’d take the LEAP.

SO WHY IS THIS LITTLE BASTARD $159?

That’s the annoying part.
Because at first glance it shouldn’t be.
It’s a mount.
It doesn’t make the dot brighter.
It doesn’t make your rifle more accurate.
It doesn’t increase your split times by 37 percent despite whatever the internet tells you.
It holds your optic.
That’s it.
But it holds your optic while weighing almost nothing, has one of the cleanest QD systems available, doesn’t have levers or hardware hanging everywhere, comes in useful heights and feels like someone actually thought about every piece of material before machining it.

You’re paying for refinement. And refinement is always expensive because apparently deleting aluminum costs more than adding aluminum.

WHAT I DON’T LIKE

First:
$159 is still $159.
Reptilia gets you a very good mount for less money.
Second:
The LEAP’s skeletonized design collects dirt in approximately 700 tiny places.
If you’re one of those guys who cleans his rifle with Q-tips until it looks like it’s preparing for a dental exam, have fun.
C mount suddenly looks like it was manufactured by Caterpillar.

That’s how they get you.

FINAL VERDICT

Is the Scalarworks LEAP/01 necessary?
No.
Neither is half the crap bolted to our rifles.
But unlike a lot of expensive gun accessories, the LEAP actually provides tangible advantages.
It’s extremely light.
